Hand finishing these parts takes a very long time, the material (stainless 304) is extremely hard and wares all the tools down to nothing, however it makes good work in the brutal beijing winter, playing around with wire and tiny screws is ‘nt much fun in the cold. This series was inspired by large tool like objects i found in my dads garden shed, four in total including a ladder – that is still in the machine shop. The internal space of the shipping container serves as the rear of a speaker cabinet with no opening to the outside. A total of 40 speakers were installed in the fabricated steel wall, 32 5″ drivers and 8 15″ drivers. Both the baffle section and speaker units were fabricated in mainland china that were then driven over the border to rendezvous with the shipping container. The black tower is very nearly done, its activated by sound – when you make a noise it goes into a mechanical spasm, the heavy chain being pulled by the large industrial solenoids switching itself on and off 8 times per second. . .the metal box underneath will be filled with sand – to stop it creeping across the floor. . .
